TOWARDS ZERO DISCHARGE OF PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT
https://epress.utm.my/index.php/editedbook/catalog/book/204

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is a highly polluting by-product generated from the processing of palm oil. It contains a significant amount of organic and inorganic matter, making it a major environmental concern due to its high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The untreated discharge of POME can lead to severe water pollution, soil contamination, and greenhouse gas emissions, posing risks to both the environment and human health. As Malaysia is among the 193 member states who adopting Sustainable Development Agenda, the treatment strategy of POME should not be to limit the contamination level but to adopt various innovating strategies to recapture, reuse and recycle the POME into various usable products, creating a circular economy from POME, ending up with zero discharge of POME and achieving clean water and sanitation (SDG6).

Current POME treatment methods, such as anaerobic digestion and aerobic processes, are necessity to reduce organic load but fail to achieve the aim of zero discharge. Advanced technologies like membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes and hybrids of biological and physical/chemical treatment systems offer promising solutions. Membrane bioreactor
technology is among the promising solutions offering compact setup, shorter hydraulic time and ease of operation. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) harness microorganisms to generate electricity while treating POME, effectively lowering BOD and COD levels. Waste to-wealth initiatives are transforming POME into valuable products. Anaerobic digestion not only produces biogas but also nutrient-rich biofertilizer. POME can also be processed into animal feed, reducing reliance on conventional feedstocks. Additionally, POME can be used to produce adsorbents for water treatment, biopolymers for biodegradable plastics, industrial enzymes, bio-oil, and pyroligneous acid through pyrolysis. These advancements support sustainability and a circular economy by minimizing waste, reducing environmental impact, and creating economic opportunities. The use of renewable
energy and valuable by-products from POME helps lower greenhouse gas emissions and decreases reliance on fossil fuels.

In conclusion, integrating advanced treatment technologies and waste-to-wealth approaches can achieve zero discharge in POME treatment, promoting environmental sustainability and resource recovery in the palm oil industry. Ongoing research and development are essential to enhance these solutions' efficiency and feasibility, contributing to a more
sustainable and circular economy.

Sustainable Building and Occupant Well-being
https://epress.utm.my/index.php/editedbook/catalog/book/132

The movement of sustainable building has been evolving over the past decades. The ultimate goal of sustainable building is to encourage environmental preservation as well as the well-being and health of the occupants. Despite the fact that sustainable building practices has been established as an effort to discover architectural approaches that support three dimensions of sustainability in buildings (environmental, economic, and social), occupant well-being has always been one of the issues in built environment sustainability. This is because the rapid development of buildings over the years has incorporated problems such as hidden moisture problems that cause mold, indoor air contaminants, poor daylight access, stuffy odour and insufficient fresh air. As a result, occupant exposure to these inadequate indoor conditions has been associated with adverse health effects, lower work performance, loss in productivity, and higher rates of sick absence. The building industry has shown a growing interest in improving the quality of the indoor environment and preserving the well-being of occupants. The term of well-being has become a conventional agenda of sustainability in the building industry. However, providing an optimal indoor environment that satisfies the majority of building occupants presents substantial challenges as different occupant groups may react with different perceptions and satisfaction within the same indoor environment. Therefore, understanding the range of impacts of buildings on the well-being of the occupants as well as holistic approaches to enhance occupant well-being are critical to the successful development of sustainable buildings

ENERGY PRODUCTION RELATED FOR MALAYSIA SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
https://epress.utm.my/index.php/editedbook/catalog/book/136

A rapid pace of economic development in Malaysia has resulted in an increase in demand for energy. For ensuring continuous development could be performed without any disruptions, effective and sustainable energy are of utmost imperative. Effective and sustainable energy must consider two main aspects named as access to affordable modern energy services for those countries that are lacking, and a continuous/reliable supply for the mixture of energy resources as well as technologies (efficiencies) that could minimize damage effects to the environment. All the urban and rural areas in Malaysia have no issue with access to energy specifically electricity, hence, the major concern is related to the security and reliability of energy supply and the diversification of energy resources. Thus, this book describes the available energies in Malaysia and related matters including energy production/generation and conversion focusing on the conventional (oil and gas) and renewable energies.

Current Techniques in Protein Sciences
https://epress.utm.my/index.php/editedbook/catalog/book/50

Proteins are the basic building blocks of life. They are defined as large biomolecules, or macromolecules, consisting of one or more long chains of amino acid residues. Proteins perform a variety of functions in the cell, including catalysing metabolic and biochemical reactions, assisting DNA replication, responding to external and internal stimuli, and transporting molecules from one location to another intracellularly or extracellularly. Protein studies are important in the fields of biomedicine, environmental sciences, and industrial applications. Understanding of how protein works at the molecular level assists in the development of new disease therapy, discovers and improves the activity of industrially-important enzymes, and reveals beneficial secondary metabolites in medicinals plants, among many other interesting applications. Molecular investigation of proteins requires specialised instruments and precise techniques. Other than the commonly used sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and Western blotting (also known as protein immunoblotting), there are many other advanced techniques currently used. The techniques include surface plasmon resonance, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, cryo-electron microscopy, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Computational techniques are also indispensable in supporting wet lab experiments, and to provide precious information not observable with any other methods. This research book is aimed at showcasing various research on proteins previously or currently being carried out at UTM. With the acquisition of increasingly sophisticated instruments, software, and the development of many new techniques, protein science research is currently on the rise. This book demonstrates UTM research capability on protein sciences, and hopefully will serve as the platform for networking among the established and the new researchers interested in the field.

Sustainable Constructions in Malaysia
https://epress.utm.my/index.php/editedbook/catalog/book/45

Sustainable Construction - Waste Materials as Aggregates Replacement is the book comprising of ten (10) chapters. Each of these chapters discusses a different type of industrial, agricultural and natural wastes that demonstrate promise for future use in construction industries. Recycling of those waste materials found in abundance, can avoid deleterious environmental hazards and their incorporation has actually produced products towards sustainable construction. The results presented in these studies are not only beneficial both economically and environmentally, but also provide the industry with technical information on valuable resources that has a key role in meeting the challenges of sustainable construction in today's world. The high demand of natural resources due to rapid urbanization and the disposal problem of industrial and agricultural wastes have created opportunities for utilising these wastes (building demolished waste, laterite aggregates, garnet, water treatment plant waste, plastic aggregates, palm oil clinker) as aggregates replacement in the concrete. Research has shown that waste materials incorporated in concrete could enable the construction industry to become more sustainable and economical but also a contributor to overcome other related ecological, sociological and economic problems associated with it.

Scientific Approaches to Crime Investigations
https://epress.utm.my/index.php/editedbook/catalog/book/19

Due to the overly-publicised information about the use of scientific approaches in crime investigations and because criminals are getting more educated nowadays, continuous developments in forensic science appear imperative. This fact is further accentuated by the high complexity of crimes that we are dealing with, as well as the possible loss of evidence due to degradations and 'clean-up' process undertaken by criminals to cover-up their trails. In this regard, forensic scientists are responsible to rapidly move multiple steps ahead of the criminals to ensure that justice can be upheld.

While most forensic books described the basic theories and applications of science in forensic investigations alone, detail discussions on the current developments and perspectives of several pertinent fields in forensic science remain scarce. Hence, specific discussions on the current trend/issues in fingerprint, forensic entomology, forensic toxicology, several forensic pattern recognition techniques, capillary electrophoresis and chromatographic methods, fire investigations, inter kingdom communications between necrobiomes and insects of forensic importance as well as forensic diatomology will be made in this book. Considering that books with similar focus in the market remain scarce, the publication of this edited book would prove necessary to serve as reference materials for forensic scientists as well as forensic investigators and legal practitioners.

COMPUTATIONAL MODELLING AND SIMULATION FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS
https://epress.utm.my/index.php/editedbook/catalog/book/34

Computational modeling and simulation for biomedical applications have facilitated scientists and researchers in their quests to explain complex biomedical behaviors and systems virtually. It has opened-up hidden views which help researchers to make deliberate decisions in improving recent innovation while reducing the overall time, cost and materials required. Unimaginable effects and reactions caused by nature can now be represented in clearer schematics and diagrams. These versatile tools have allowed researchers to accurately conclude and predict various phenomenon prior to implementing them in real applications. Advancements in computational ability have pushed the boundaries even further. For instance, a damage mechanics of glenoid labrum can now be simulated in rocking horse phenomena (RHP) by using multiple virtual pegs even before it gets fabricated. This book showcases several successful studies that manifest the use of various computational simulation approaches in solving biomedical and bioengineering problems. It covers a wide range of topics from ankle and foot bones development to breast cancer and renal screening simulations. Each chapter focuses on a specific topic which can be understood on its own. This book will be beneficial for students, engineers, researchers as well as medical practitioners.
